The first legend says that the name Maries comes from the many mouries (Morus or Mulberry) of the village, while the other refers to two girls called Mary who were the only survivors from a pirate raid against the local population.
Today the village is quite isolated without appreciable tourist interest, but it doesn’t lack from beauty and scenic landscapes. It should be noted that the village is ideal for those who seak peace and serenity, as the famous artificial Lake of Maries with the surrounding verdant mountainsides compose a truly serene and harmonious background.
Skala Maries instead, located 12 km from the village is a developed tourist area, built by the sea with picturesque taverns, rooms to let and the most beautiful unorganized beach of Thassos, the Aspas (or Atspas), a small bay with crystal shallow waters and fine sand.
"The lake of Maries is surrounded by pure natural beauty…"
